Reddit went Dark, why?
On June 12, 2023, thousands of subreddits on Reddit went dark in a protest to the company's plans to change its API pricing structure. The new pricing structure would charge third-party developers for high-volume data requests, which could make it more difficult for developers to create tools that improve the user experience on Reddit.
The protest was organized by the Reddit API team, a group of developers who create tools and apps that use the Reddit API. The team argued that the new pricing structure would be unfair to developers and would make it more difficult for them to create new and innovative tools for Reddit users.
The protest began on Monday, and lasted for 48 hours. During that time, the affected subreddits were set to "private," which means that only subscribers could view them. The protest ended on Wednesday, June 14.
Some of the subreddits that went dark in protest were: r/gaming, r/music, r/science, r/todayilearned and r/AskReddit etc.

The protest was successful in drawing attention to the issue. On Monday afternoon, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman sent a memo to employees addressing the issue and recommended them to avoid wearing company gears in public. Here is the full text of the memo:
Reddit has since announced that it will be delaying the implementation of the new pricing structure. However, the issue is still unresolved, and it is unclear what the future holds for the Reddit API. After the leak of the memo of the CEO, a lot of very popular subreddits have announced their intention to remain private for an indefinite period of time. Read More »»»

New French Law Allows Remote Phone Surveillance
The French Senate has approved a bill that allows law enforcement to remotely activate the cameras or microphones of people's phones. It would require to obtain a warrant from a judge before they could remotely activate someone's phone's cameras or microphones. However, the warrant would not need to specify the specific device that would be targeted. The move has been criticised for potential misuse, police intrusion and privacy breach. Read More »»»

Taiwan Resists US Chip Capture
Taiwanese businesses and the public are showing a growing concern that the US is trying to capture Taiwan's chipmaking industry. They believe that this would give the US too much control over the global chip supply, and it would make Taiwan more vulnerable to US economic coercion. Now, it is being said that TSMC is "quietly fighting" this US industrial capture. Read More »»»
