ONE STORY IN A PICTURE
TWO IDEAS, FRAMEWORKS OR CONCEPTS
This week we bring to you two concepts from Korean culture - Jeong & Nunchi
Jeong
Jeong is a fascinating concept deeply rooted in Korean culture. It's a complex and multifaceted term that encompasses various emotions and sentiments, including love, affection, empathy, attachment, and loyalty.
Fundamentally, Jeong signifies a deep emotional connection and commitment to someone or something.
One aspect of Jeong is its emphasis on relational bonds, whether within families, friendships, or communities. It's about fostering and maintaining strong connections with others, often characterized by mutual care, support, and understanding.
Jeong also involves a sense of enduring loyalty and commitment, even in the face of adversity or challenges. It's about standing by someone through thick and thin, demonstrating unwavering support and devotion.
Jeong extends beyond human relationships to include connections with places, objects, and even abstract concepts. For example, someone might feel Jeong for their hometown, a cherished possession, or a meaningful tradition.
Jeong encapsulates the deep emotional ties and bonds that form the fabric of Korean society, emphasizing the importance of relationships, empathy, and interconnectedness.

Nunchi
Nunchi can be described as the ability to quickly understand others' emotions, thoughts, and intentions in social situations and to respond appropriately. Essentially, it's the art of reading the room and being sensitive to the feelings and needs of those around you.
At its core, nunchi is about empathy and social intelligence. It involves paying close attention to nonverbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, and subtle shifts in mood. By observing these cues, individuals with strong nunchi can gauge the dynamics of a situation and adjust their behaviour accordingly to ensure harmony and avoid causing discomfort or offense.
Nunchi is highly valued in Korean society as a crucial skill for navigating interpersonal relationships and social interactions effectively. It's seen as a mark of maturity, wisdom, and respect for others. Those who possess good nunchi are often admired for their ability to connect with people, diffuse tensions, and create positive atmospheres.
Practicing nunchi involves being attentive, perceptive, and considerate of others' feelings and perspectives. It requires humility, self-awareness, and a genuine interest in understanding and empathizing with those around you.
Nunchi plays a significant role in fostering harmonious relationships and social cohesion in Korean culture, serving as a guiding principle for communication and interaction.
THREE NEWS FROM THE WEEK
Google Joins the $2 Trillion Club: Search Giant Soars on Strong Earnings and AI Focus
Alphabet, Google's parent company, has reached a monumental peak, surpassing a $2 trillion market cap. This achievement was fuelled by a surge in its stock price, which jumped over 10% before closing on Friday, pushing the market cap to a whopping $2.14 trillion.
The impressive stock performance follows a stellar year with a 23% increase year-to-date and a staggering 59% rise over the past year. This milestone positions Alphabet as the world's fourth most valuable publicly traded company, following industry titans Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft.
This achievement isn't just about a big number. It signifies Google's undeniable influence in the tech industry and the global economy. So, what propelled them to such heights?
Firstly, Alphabet's recent quarterly results shattered expectations. They reported a nearly 60% profit surge compared to the same period last year. This financial strength stemmed from robust performances across all platforms, including Search, YouTube, and the increasingly important Google Cloud. Notably, Google Cloud's launch of over 1,000 new features and products, powered by AI advancements from their groundbreaking AI model, Gemini, significantly contributed to this success.
Secondly, Alphabet's strategic decisions further fueled investor confidence. They announced their first-ever cash dividend of 20 cents per share, to be distributed this summer. Additionally, a substantial stock buyback plan solidified their commitment to the future and bolstered investor confidence in the company's stock.

FCC Restores Net Neutrality in Landmark Vote
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted on April 25, 2024, to reinstate net neutrality regulations, marking a significant victory for proponents of an open and accessible internet. The 3-2 vote, along party lines, reverses the FCC's 2017 decision to repeal Obama-era net neutrality rules.
The new regulations reclassify broadband internet service as a Title II telecommunications service, granting the FCC the authority to prevent internet service providers (ISPs) from throttling speeds, blocking content, or offering paid prioritization.
Proponents of net neutrality argue these practices stifle innovation and competition online, potentially giving large corporations an unfair advantage. They believe a level playing field is essential for a healthy and vibrant internet ecosystem.
The FCC's decision comes after years of intense debate and public pressure. Net neutrality advocates mobilized significant public support, with millions of comments submitted to the FCC urging them to restore the regulations.
However, the issue remains contentious. Opponents, including some ISPs, argue that net neutrality regulations stifle investment and innovation in the internet infrastructure. They believe a lighter-touch approach would be more beneficial for consumers.
The long-term impact of the FCC's decision remains to be seen. Legal challenges are expected, and the future of net neutrality could hinge on upcoming court rulings. Nonetheless, the FCC's vote represents a major win for net neutrality supporters and a step towards a more open and equitable internet.

Elon Musk's AI Firm, xAI, Nears $6 Billion Funding Milestone
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, is on the cusp of securing a massive $6 billion fundraising round, according to reports. This influx of capital would value the young company at a staggering $18 billion.
Sequoia Capital, a prominent venture capital firm with a history of backing Musk's ventures like SpaceX and his recent acquisition of Twitter, is reportedly leading the investment round. Other participants remain undisclosed, but Musk's ventures have attracted interest from firms like Valor Equity Partners and Vy Capital in the past.
Founded just ten months ago, xAI has already attracted top engineering talent, including key figures from Tesla. This significant funding boost suggests investors' confidence in xAI's ability to compete in the increasingly crowded AI landscape, particularly against OpenAI, another major player in the field. Notably, Musk was a founding member of OpenAI but has since distanced himself due to disagreements over its direction.
The substantial investment in xAI signifies a growing trend: investors are diversifying their bets within the AI sector, where valuations have skyrocketed. With this funding, xAI is poised to accelerate its development efforts and potentially reshape the future of artificial intelligence.
