ONE STORY IN A PICTURE
TWO IDEAS, FRAMEWORKS OR CONCEPTS
This week we bring to you two concepts - Law of Accelerating Returns & Weber–Fechner Law
Law of Accelerating Returns
The "Law of Accelerating Returns" is a concept introduced by futurist & inventor Ray Kurzweil. It describes the exponential growth of technology and its impact on various fields over time. This concept is often associated with Kurzweil's ideas about the Singularity, a hypothetical point in the future where technological progress becomes so rapid and transformative that it fundamentally changes human civilization.
The Law of Accelerating Returns is based on the observation that the rate of progress is not linear but rather exponential. Simply speaking, New discoveries facilitate newer discoveries, so technological progress is not linear but exponential. For 300,000 years, humans didn’t have computers. Then, in less than a century, we invented PCs, the web, smartphones, and generative AI.

Weber–Fechner Law
The Weber-Fechner law, is a principle in psychophysics that describes the relationship between the intensity of a physical stimulus and the psychological sensation it produces. explains that our ability to perceive changes in stimuli is relative to the magnitude of the original stimulus.
This phenomenon explains why we may not notice small changes in large stimuli, such as the price of a house, but do notice small changes in small stimuli, such as the price of a shirt. Each bottom square contains 10 more dots than the one above. This is noticeable when the dots are few (left) but not when they're many (right).

The fall in inflation is being driven by a number of factors, including the recent decline in energy prices. However, inflation is still well above the Bank of England's target of 2%. Read More »»»

Amazon introduces Palm-Scanning Payment
Amazon's palm-scanning payment technology, Amazon One, is planned to be launched in all 500+ Whole Foods Market stores in the US by the end of 2023. The technology works by having customers hover their palm above a reader device, which then identifies their unique palm signature and charges their payment card on file. Amazon has been testing this technology for quite sometime now and it is part of their broader push into frictionless checkout technology. Read More »»»
