TOP STORY
Meta launched Threads, Twitter Sued them.
Meta launched its new text-based social media app Threads on July 5, 2023. The app was designed to be a more intimate and personal experience than other social media platforms, and it was integrated with Instagram so that users could share their Threads posts with their Instagram followers.
On its first day, Threads was downloaded by over 40 million users, and by time of writing this it is getting close to 100 million. The app was praised for its focus on privacy and intimacy, and it was seen as a potential rival to Twitter.
On the same day, news of Twitter threatening to sue Meta over "systematic, willful and unlawful misappropriation" of Twitter's trade secrets and IP, as well as scraping of Twitter's data, was reported, which seemed to be confirmed by the leaked letter from Elon Musk’s lawyer to Meta and a subsequent tweet by Elon Musk himself. Threads was developed by Meta's New Product Experimentation (NPE) team, which is responsible for developing new products and features for Meta's platforms.
There is much chatter about launch of Threads being a death knell for Twitter and it is being believed that Twitter is no more the quintessential ‘digital town square’. But there is also opinions that Thread is not the supposed Twitter killer.
We will hold our judgment until the dust settles.
