Neuralink Receives FDA Approval for Human Trials
On May 25, Elon Musk's neurotechnology startup Neuralink received FDA approval to begin human trials of its brain implant technology.
Neuralink is a neurotechnology startup founded by Elon Musk in 2016. The company's goal is to develop brain-computer interfaces that will allow people to control computers and other devices with their thoughts. Neuralink's brain implant technology is made up of a thin, flexible chip that is implanted into the brain. The chip is connected to a small computer that is worn on the person's chest. The computer can then be used to control devices, such as a wheelchair or a computer cursor.
FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said, "The FDA's approval of Neuralink's clinical trial is an important step forward for the development of brain-computer interfaces. This technology has the potential to help people with a wide range of neurological conditions, and we are committed to working with companies like Neuralink to ensure that these devices are safe and effective."
The clinical trial will involve a small number of people with severe paralysis. The participants will have the Neuralink brain implant surgically placed in their brains. The implant will then be used to control a computer cursor.
The clinical trial is expected to last for two years. The primary outcome of the trial will be to assess the safety of the Neuralink brain implant. The secondary outcome of the trial will be to assess the effectiveness of the implant in controlling a computer cursor.
The FDA approval of Neuralink's clinical trial is a major step forward for the company. However, it is important to note that the trial is still in its early stages. It is not yet clear if the implant will be safe and effective for people with severe paralysis. If the trial is successful, it could pave the way for Neuralink to develop implants that could help people with a wide range of neurological conditions.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, has fallen into recession. The country's economy shrank by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2023, following a 0.5% contraction at the end of 2022. This marks the first time that Germany has been in recession since 2020.
The recession in Germany is a sign of the challenges that the global economy is facing. The war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising inflation are all taking a toll on economic activity. Twitter withdraws from EU’s Code of Practice on Disinformation
In a statement, Twitter said that it had withdrawn from the Code of Practice because it was "not the right forum" for the company to address the issue of disinformation. Twitter said that it was committed to fighting disinformation, but that it believed that the best way to do so was through its own policies and products.
The Code of Practice is a voluntary agreement between social media companies and the EU that sets out a number of commitments to combat disinformation.
The EU's Disinformation Commissioner, Thierry Breton, criticized Twitter's decision to withdraw from the Code of Practice. Breton said that Twitter's decision was "a missed opportunity" to work with the EU to combat disinformation. Read More »»»
