The Markings of a Start-up CEO
Successful start-ups are difficult to build and thus the CEO at helm need to be packing key attributes distinctly different from corporate CEOs. Let's look at the markings of start-up CEOs.
When investors place their bets on a start-up, it's often more than a gamble on the idea—it's a bet on the individuals propelling the vision forward. At the heart of this dynamic stands the pivotal figure: the CEO, steering the entire endeavour.
Unlike traditional corporate leadership, a start-up CEO isn't navigating an organization with a trajectory predetermined for the long haul. Instead, they find themselves forging the path as they go, lacking the luxury of years of experience within the organization they now lead, as is often the case with corporate CEOs. While the 'role' based on designation sounds same for both the corporate and start-up CEOs, the challenges confronting a start-up CEO are uniquely distinct, demanding a skill set that shapes the very future of the start-up venture.
In this issue of The Founder’s Brew, we will delve in to the markings of a start-up CEO; a set of attributes that every CEO of the start-up must show if the initiative has to meet the promised future.
Founder vs The CEO
More often than not, the CEO of a start-up is the founder or one of the co-founders. However, we've all encountered noteworthy instances where start-up boards have taken the unprecedented step of removing the founders, appointing an external CEO to steer the ship.
At first glance, this move might seem counterintuitive. After all, who could be better suited to lead a start-up than those who conceived it and propelled it into existence? Yet, founding a start-up is one aspect; effectively running and nurturing its growth is an entirely different challenge. Consequently, it becomes paramount for founders to discern the essential attributes required to be a skilled CEO in the start-up realm and actively cultivate them.
