For the last two decades, we have relied on “The Cloud” as a convenient, almost magical metaphor. It sounded ethereal, weightless, and infinitely scalable. But anyone who works in the infrastructure layers of the internet knows that the cloud is actually incredibly heavy. It is millions of tons of reinforced concrete, miles of copper wiring, structured steel, and massive diesel backup generators, humming incessantly inside windowless warehouses in places like Northern Virginia, Frankfurt, and Mumbai.

But as of early 2026, the industry has hit a wall. A hard, undeniable physics wall.

The era of “digital storage”, where data centres were essentially just quiet, highly organized libraries for our smartphone photos, corporate emails, and streaming movies, is definitively over. We have entered the era of the AI Factory. And these new factories are rapidly running out of the one raw material they need more than anything else: power.
